If you are heading to Muskoka with your dog, you are probably wondering whether you can bring them along on the boat. The answer is yes — dogs are welcome on our rentals, and Lake Muskoka is genuinely one of the best places in Ontario to have a dog on the water. A little preparation makes the difference between a great day and a stressful one. Here is what you need to know.

Do Dogs Need Life Jackets on a Boat?

Legally, dogs are not required to wear life jackets on a pleasure craft in Ontario — but it is strongly recommended, and most experienced boaters would not take their dog out without one. Dogs can fall overboard unexpectedly, especially when they get excited watching wildlife or moving closer to the edge to look at the water. A properly fitted canine life jacket with a handle on top makes retrieval quick and keeps a tired swimmer afloat. They are widely available at pet stores and online — look for one with a grab handle and reflective strips.

Getting Your Dog Comfortable with the Boat

If your dog has never been on a boat, a short introduction before a full-day trip makes a big difference. Let them explore the stationary boat, get comfortable with the movement, and associate the whole experience with positive things (treats, praise, familiar toys). Most dogs adapt quickly — within 20 to 30 minutes most are relaxed and enjoying the wind in their face. A dog who has never been on a boat and is already anxious before the engine starts will have a harder time settling in once you are underway.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Dog Day on the Lake

Bring fresh drinking water and a collapsible bowl — dogs should not drink directly from the lake, regardless of how clear it looks. Sunscreen matters for dogs too, particularly on exposed areas like the nose and ears on short-haired breeds or light-coloured dogs. Bring a towel dedicated to the dog — they will be wet multiple times throughout the day. If your dog tends to pace or moves around a lot, designate a specific area of the boat as theirs and encourage them to stay there when underway. A non-slip mat on the deck helps dogs feel more secure on a moving boat.

Swimming from the Boat

Most dogs love the opportunity to swim from the boat. When you are anchored, deploy the swim ladder and let them go — Lake Muskoka is clean, the water is refreshing, and a good swim tires a dog out in the best possible way. Watch for signs of exhaustion, especially in the heat of the afternoon. Older dogs and short-legged breeds tire more quickly in the water than they appear to from the surface. Always have a hand free to assist when the dog is climbing back on board.

What to Watch Out For

Blue-green algae is a seasonal concern on some Ontario lakes and can be toxic to dogs. Check local advisories before your trip and keep your dog out of any water that looks green, murky, or has a surface film. Lake Muskoka is generally well-managed in this regard, but it pays to check. Keep your dog away from the engine area, especially when the motor is running. And be aware of boat traffic when your dog is in the water — always watch for approaching vessels.

Letting Us Know in Advance

When you book with Matchless Adventures, let us know if you are bringing a dog. We will make sure the boat is set up as well as possible for the day and can offer a few additional tips specific to the vessel you are renting.
