A day on Lake Muskoka is one of those experiences that the whole family will be talking about for years — but only if you are prepared. Forget the sunscreen and you will be miserable by noon. Forget the snacks and the kids will be asking to go home by 2pm. We have seen it all. Here is the complete packing list, based on what actually matters for a full day out on the water.

Sun Protection — Non-Negotiable

The reflection off the water amplifies the sun significantly. You will burn faster on a boat than almost anywhere else, especially on a bright summer day on a clear lake. Pack SPF 50 or higher sunscreen and apply it before you leave the dock. Reapply every two hours. Wide-brimmed hats are your friend, especially for younger kids. UV-protective swim shirts for children are worth every penny — they eliminate the constant reapplication battle and provide full protection without the mess.

Life Jackets and Safety Gear

When you rent from Matchless Adventures, your boat comes equipped with Transport Canada-approved life jackets for every passenger, a fire extinguisher, a sound signalling device, and a bailer. You do not need to bring your own safety equipment. That said, if your little ones are used to their own personal fit life jacket, feel free to bring it — familiar gear can make nervous kids much more comfortable on the water.

Food and Drinks — Pack More Than You Think

A day on the lake burns more calories than it feels like it should. Between the swimming, the sun, and all the fresh air, appetites are bigger than usual. Pack a proper cooler with sandwiches, fruit, cheese, crackers, and plenty of cold water and drinks. A bag of snacks that is easily accessible without digging through the cooler is a smart move when someone needs a quick handful of trail mix while underway. Avoid glass bottles on board — aluminum cans or soft-sided containers are the practical choice.

Dry Bags and Waterproof Cases

Phones, keys, and wallets do not mix well with boats. A good dry bag is the single most useful item you can bring that most people forget. A small waterproof phone pouch lets you take photos without the anxiety. Keep cash, documents, and electronics in a dry bag tucked under a seat. Everything else can get wet — plan accordingly and you will be much more relaxed.

Towels and a Change of Clothes

Bring more towels than you think you need — one per person is rarely enough. A lightweight microfibre towel is ideal because it dries fast and takes up very little space. Pack a change of clothes for the kids in particular, because no matter what you plan, they will end up soaked. A light layer for the ride home is worth including, especially if you plan to be out past sunset when the temperature on the water drops quickly.

Entertainment for the Kids

Older kids will find their entertainment in the tubing, swimming, and exploring. For younger children who may need a break between activities, a simple bag of waterproof toys — pool noodles, a frisbee, goggles, a small snorkel kit — goes a long way. If you are renting a pontoon, there is plenty of room on the deck for a lazy afternoon of splash and play.

A First Aid Kit

Minor scrapes and sunburns happen. A small basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, after-sun lotion, and pain reliever covers the most common scenarios. It weighs almost nothing and the one time you need it, you will be very glad it is there.

The Stuff Most People Forget

Sunglasses (polarized lenses make a huge difference on the water). A waterproof Bluetooth speaker. Anchor weed (a small brush for clearing debris off the anchor rope). Bug spray for the shoreline stops. And most importantly — a fully charged phone before you leave the dock. There is no charging option on the water.

Ready to plan your family lake day? Matchless Adventures delivers pontoons, deck boats, and Sea-Doos free to your dock anywhere in Muskoka.
