You have decided to rent a boat for your Muskoka trip — great decision. Now comes the question we hear constantly at Matchless Adventures: should you go with a pontoon or a deck boat? Both are excellent choices, but they are built for different kinds of days on the water. Here is a straightforward breakdown to help you choose.

The Pontoon Boat — Built for Comfort and Groups

A pontoon is essentially a floating patio. The flat deck, wrap-around seating, and stable platform make it the most social boat on the water. Our pontoons range from 19 to 23 feet and comfortably seat 10 to 12 people. If you are coming up with a large family or a group of friends and the priority is relaxing, swimming, and cruising at a comfortable pace, the pontoon is almost always the right call. They are also the most beginner-friendly boat in our fleet — wide, stable, and easy to manoeuvre.

The Deck Boat — Built for Action

The deck boat is the choice when your group wants to do more than cruise. It has a V-hull, which means it handles chop better than a pontoon and is purpose-built for towing. Tube behind it, wakeboard, waterski — the deck boat handles all of it. It is also faster than a pontoon, so if you want to cover more of the lake in a day, you will get there sooner. Seating is slightly more compact than a pontoon, but there is still plenty of room for a group of six to eight people.

Which Is Better for Families with Kids?

Both work well for families, but the choice really comes down to what the kids want to do. If they are younger and you want a calm, safe day of swimming and lake exploration, the pontoon is the better fit — the low entry point into the water makes it easy for kids to climb back on board, and the stable deck means less risk of someone going over unexpectedly. If the kids are older and want to tube or wakeboard, book the deck boat. It is built for exactly that kind of day.

Which Is Better for a Long Day of Cruising?

If you are planning to cover ground — cruise to Port Carling, stop at Bala, explore the north shore — the pontoon wins for comfort. The seating is more relaxed, there is more room to spread out, and you can set up a proper cooler and enjoy the ride. The deck boat is more nimble but less suited for an all-day, low-speed exploration trip with a large group.

What About Cost?

Pricing between the two is comparable. The larger pontoon models (23-foot) carry a slight premium, but the day rates are in the same range. We always recommend choosing based on what your group plans to do rather than price alone — the right boat makes the whole day better.

The Short Answer

If your group is large, you want a relaxed day, or you are new to boating — rent the pontoon. If you want speed, towing, and more adventure — rent the deck boat. Not sure? Call us and tell us a bit about your group and your plans, and we will recommend the right fit. Our team knows both boats well and will steer you in the right direction.
